A Conversation About Chronic Pain

Many of us, especially as we age, experience chronic pain – not debilitating but significant enough to require daily management. While often the pain is physical (e.g., from arthritis), sometimes the pain can be emotional (e.g. from an unreconciled relationship). I’ve been in discussions about possible remedies – medicines, physical practices, etc. – but I haven’t read or shared much about the spiritual side of dealing with pain. Some of us may want to “pray it away” (as did Paul!), but for others, that approach doesn’t fully address the day-to-day spiritual struggle that chronic pain can cause.

If you’ve experienced this sort of pain – or know someone who has and want to understand more – and have questions or ideas about what a stronger spiritual life might look like during this season, we invite you into a conversation. The focus will not be on remedies for the pain but what does God’s abundant life look like when we are hurting.

This conversation will be led by JoAnn Morse

Taize Communal Singing led by Daniel Hickman

Led by seminarian Daniel Hickman, this service features time for silent reflection, icon-gazing, and singing in multiple languages.

Taizé monastery is an ecumenical community of monks in France (half of which are Catholic and half of which are Protestant) devoted to peace and unity in the world. Their daily prayers include meditative hymns which have become popular all over the world.

If you're interested in learning more about Taizé or helping with the service (perhaps reading scripture or writing prayers), let Daniel know! daniel7hickman@gmail.com

Annual Meeting

Church of the Advent's Annual Meeting will be February 1 in the Communal Kitchen after the 10am service. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. In the Episcopal tradition, an annual meeting is an opportunity to reflect on the past year and look towards the year ahead. We'll reflect on our shared ministries from 2025 and discuss our goals and budget for 2026. We will also elect new members of the vestry, a new member to the endowment committee, and delegates to the diocesan convention.

Finally, we will be voting on the following proposed amendment to Article III.15.c of our bylaws:

All money and investments heretofore held as assets of, and administered as part of, the Endowment fund shall be held or invested and disbursed as determined by the Vestry with guidance from the Endowment Committee.

It's also our first monthly potluck, so please bring a dish to share if you're able!

You can also join the Annual Meeting online here and access the 2025 Annual Report here.
